Build Africa's Shared Compute & AI Infrastructure

About Build 2026

A continental platform for Africa's AI future

BUILD 2026 brings together the people who decide how Africa’s AI infrastructure gets built, and on whose terms.

Build 2026 is Africa's Shared Compute and AI Infrastructure Conference hosted by the Nigeria AI Collective, under the leadership of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.

It is a platform to examine how Africa’s AI ambitions can be supported through regional approaches to shared compute, infrastructure investment, economic investment, governance, and partnerships that strengthen Africa’s AI ecosystem.

The conference will place this continental discourse at the crossroads of a diverse range of stakeholders, who will concretely define actionable approaches for policy beyond rhetoric. With severe shortfalls in power, connectivity, human capital, network bandwidth, and an evolving policy environment, the expansion of locally owned compute infrastructure remains an important priority for Africa’s AI ecosystem. Undoubtedly, the African compute infrastructure will be built.

This conference will frame a roadmap for governments to incentivize African multinationals towards the uptake of AI infrastructure to achieve digital sovereignty; largely by upskilling and building industry-specific AI solutions to capture future market value. Stakeholders will discuss how to best capitalize on AI innovation and invest in solutions that benefit local communities.

Build 2026 places high premium on private sector role and policy parallels, calling for a heavy private sector presence as a requisite to spur investment and influence government policy, aware that investor incentives engender optimism for private solutions. The conference seeks to enlist private sector interest through advocacy for clear policies and business models. Indeed, Africa must translate the existing continental AI strategy into concrete negotiation, pricing and procurement frameworks, thus co-creating a clear picture of what her AI sovereignty targets are.

Rationale for the Conference

The accelerated development of artificial intelligence presents Africa with a strategic opportunity to shape its digital future. BUILD 2026 is convened at a critical moment to advance three strategic priorities – Infrastructure, Economics, and Geopolitics – that will shape Africa’s AI future and determine the continent’s position in the global AI ecosystem.

Infrastructure: Africa’s AI ambitions remain constrained by limited access to reliable electricity, shared compute, AI-ready data centres, and digital infrastructure. Addressing these foundational gaps is essential to expanding AI innovation and ensuring equitable access to compute across the continent.

Economics: Compute infrastructure is increasingly driving productivity, industrial competitiveness, and economic growth. The Conference will examine how investments in compute can contribute to GDP growth, create high-value jobs, retain digital value within African economies, and unlock new opportunities for local private sector investment.

Geopolitics: As AI reshapes global power dynamics, Africa must strengthen its collective position on digital sovereignty, regional cooperation, and access to strategic AI infrastructure. The Conference provides a platform to advance African priorities in global AI governance and foster partnerships that support an inclusive and competitive AI ecosystem.

Strategic Objectives
